CANCER SURGERY

On March 5, 2012 I couragously submitted myself for major surgery at Keck Hospital at USC Los Angleles. After suffering with aggressive, recurrant basal cell skin cancer since it returned in 2008. I was finally approved by my HMO to undergo a 9 hour procedure to remove my right ear and the surrounding cancerous tissues. I must admit that I was apprehensive about surviving this long of a surgery and the day I was admitted I found myself trembling so bad with fear during the preop. The anestesiologist put all fears to rest with his reassurance that 'he would be by my side the entire time and not to worry.' My doctors were amazing. They had no idea how bad the cancer was until Dr. Maceri opened me up and began to do his magic. Originally, he thought that they might only need around 15 frozen margins to get a cancer-free zone....but no! It took over 60 frozen margins to finally get a cancer-free area. The tumor itself was as big as an ice cream cone....(double dip or triple dip, I wonder.)
When I finally awoke my hands were in restraints and a plastic tube was down my throat. I screamed for them to remove it but no sound came out of me. Finally they removed the breathing tube and the restraints. I was in the ICU for over 3 days until they finally moved me to my own room with a view of the beautiful fountain below.
I stayed at the hospital until the following Monday when I was released to go home and recuperate which is what I am doing right now.

Eventually, I hope to get back to drumming and my job at BUR. I am determined to get back to being ME again!!! Thanks to God for giving me a second chance at life.
